Karara has 'key role' in global crisis
The MidWest Times - Megan Bailey

WITH final enviromental approvals for Gindalbie Metals' Karara iron ore project in the hands of environment minister Donna Faragher after EPA recommendations for the project were finalised this week, Premier Colin Barnett has described his government as one that 'makes decisions in the best interests of the State'.

Mr Barnett said that if approved by the Liberal Nation Government Karara, located 225 kilometres east of Geraldton, would play a key role in enhancing the State's prospects of weathering the global economic crisis.

"This project and others that are likely to follow, highlight the importance of the Oakajee Port development as a world-class facility that will result in economic growth and provide jobs within Western Australia and nationally," he said.

Gindalbie has said its ore from Karara, which it hopes to start mining in 2010, would constitute 50 per cent of the first berth to leave the Oakajee Port. Until then it plans to ship ore out of the Geraldton Port.

Karara is expected to create around 1500 jobs in the Mid West and generate an annual export revenue of around $1 billion.
